A Grenada man was killed in a wreck Saturday on Highway 8 east of Grenada, according to a spokesman for the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The victim was identified as 68-year-old L.C. Goins, according to TFC Tony Dunn, public affairs officer, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Troop D, Greenwood District.
According to Dunn, a 2008 Volkswagen Passant driven by a 16-year-old girl from Grenada was traveling west on Highway 8. Goins, who was driving a 1993 Mazda Protege, attempted to avoid a vehicle that was traveling east and attempting to make a left turn across the highway in front of his vehicle. In doing so he traveled into the westbound lane and collided head-on with the Volkswagen, Dunn said.
The 16-year-old driver was transported the Grenada Lake Medical Center by Grenada Lake Medical EMS with moderate injuries, according to Dunn. Goins was airlifted by Medstat Air EMS to The University Medical Center in Jackson and later died of injuries sustained in the accident, Dunn said.
The accident is still under investigation by The Mississippi Highway Patrol, Dunn said.
