It was a game that the Kirk Raiders needed desperately.
Following last week’s 56-14 loss at home to Marshall, the Raiders went back to work in preparation for their first road game at Lee (Ark.) Academy.
The Raiders scored early and often against the Cougars, winning a 44-0 decision.
With the win, Kirk improves to 1-1 on the season.
“It was good to get a win,” Coach John McCrory said. “I think, by in large, we handled the heat much better. Defensively, we did a better job of getting in our right spots.”
Kirk wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Senior Dalton Turner sprinted 65 yards on the first offensive play of the game to make it 7-0 following Travis Taylor’s extra point. Turner would add another touchdown in the contest on a run.
Quarterback Gunner Hudspeth had touchdown passes to Josh Branscome and Peyton Box. Hunter Dees also scored on a one-yard run. Junior Zach Beckum had a 68-yard interception return to see up a score. Beckum also scored on a run.
Taylor had eight points on the night. He kicked five extra points and added a field goal.
The Raiders return to action Friday with a trip to Winona to face the Winona Christian Stars. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
