Two Kirk Academy graduates are vying for the title of Miss Mississippi this week in Vicksburg.
Mary Lauren Brunson, class of 2008, and Courtney Parella, class of 2010, are among the 35 women competing for the sash and tiara as the state’s top beauty.
Brunson enters the pageant as Miss Pontotoc, but the area she represents includes Grenada.
Brunson is a recent graduate of the University of Mississippi where she received her bachelor’s degree in communicative sciences and disorders. At Ole Miss Brunson was a student senator and was elected Who’s Who of American Colleges and Universities.  She was a member of Chi Omega Tau Sorority.
Brunson is currently pursuing her master’s degree in early oral intervention at the University of Southern Mississippi. She plans to begin a doctoral program in audiology next fall.
Brunson’s platform is Autism Speaks, an autism science and advocacy organization.
Parella qualified to compete for Miss Mississippi by being crowned Miss Mississippi College.
She graduated valedictorian from Kirk and was awarded the Tommy Wolfe Memorial Award by the GrenadaStar for excellence as a student athlete.
Parella’s platform is Homeless Mission, a project where each week Mississippi College students feed, clothe and meet the needs of the homeless in Jackson.
“Participating in the pageant is a great experience. I love being on stage,” said Parella. “Grenada is my home, and I’m so thankful to everyone for their support.”
The pageant will be July 10-13 at the Vicksburg Convention Center. Viewers can watch a live webcast on missmississippipageant.com or watch the finals Saturday on FOX 27.
