A Grenada beauty queen is partnering with a fraternity to raise awareness about autism.
Grenadian Mary Lauren Brunson, who was crowned Miss Pontotoc 2013, is asking local businesses and individuals to walk in support of Autism Speaks.
The walk will take place June 2, with registration starting at 2 p.m. It will start at the campground at the north abutment of Grenada Lake.
Autism Speaks is a unique fundraising event which creates a safe and fun day for families affected by autism. Refreshments will be served and participants can enjoy live music.
Registration for the walk is $15 per person, $50 for a small team and $100 for a team of eight or more.
“Having a child with a developmental disability is a big challenge, and we want families to know that we support them,” said Brunson, who works at an autism clinic in Memphis.
Brunson is partnering with the Mississippi Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Mississippi State University to bring awareness to the issue.
“We’d love to have more corporate sponsors,” said fraternity member Shane Provine. “This is a cause that the whole community can support.”
