Get your motor running; heads up on the highway.
That’s the message some local motorcycle riders are hoping to spread at an upcoming meeting.
Grenada now has a chapter of MAC, or Motorcycle Awareness Campaign. It’s a national effort to encourage folks to be careful on the highways and to watch out for motorcycle riders.
The chapter will hold its first meeting March 11 at 7 p.m. at No Way Jose Mexican Restaurant. Everyone is invited.
“Anybody who loves the wind in their face is welcome,” said Benji Britt, one of the MAC organizers.
MAC isn’t affiliated with any particular motorcycle group. It’s a kind of all-encompassing organization that includes riders and supporters from several groups.
“Membership is $15, and 100 percent of that goes toward motorcycle awareness, like our bumper stickers and public awareness campaigns,” said Britt.
According to MAC’s web site, two-thirds of motorcycle crashes are the result of a motorist who violated a motorcyclist’s right away or simply was not aware of the presence of a motorcycle.
“Our motto is ‘Look twice, save a life,’” said Britt, who thunders around the Lake City on a Dyna Wide Glide Harley Davidson when he’s not coordinating buses for the Grenada School District.
“When 10 or 15 riders are together, we’re hard to miss, but one rider by himself is easy to overlook,” said Britt.
