The Grenada Lake Visitors’ Center will remain open, despite cutbacks to the Army Corps of Engineers’ budget.
According to lake Project Champion Dolly Marascalco, some 15 volunteers, many retirees, have signed up to staff the center.
In January the Corps of Engineers announced that it might not be able to afford to staff the center with paid personnel.
“We’re very excited about these folks making this commitment and we’re sure it’s going to mean great things for the lake for the county,” said Marascalco, who for years has lobbied congress on behalf of the lake to secure congressional add money. That’s money above the corps’ regular, yearly budget to be used for projects like beautification and upkeep.
Marascalco has secured more than $11 million in add money over the years, but last year, because of the economy and various other factors, she was only able to secure about $100,000. That may seem like a lot, but it doesn’t go far in undertaking lake-sized projects.
