A Gore Springs guitarist was honored Thursday in Jackson for his contributions to American rock and soul music.
Eddie “Chank” Willis, whose nickname derived from the characteristic sounds his fingers made on the strings, was given an award for Excellence In Music.
Willis, 76, who was born in Grenada, is a founding member of the Funk Brothers, the studio band that played on some of Motown’s most legendary hits.
Willis was honored, along with two other artists, a theater and a teacher, at the 25th Anniversary of the Governor’s Arts Awards.
Established in 1988, the awards signify the important relationship between government and the arts. They recognize those who have made noteworthy contributions and achieved artistic excellence in the state.
The event, held at the Belhaven University Center for the Arts, was sponsored by the Mississippi Arts Commission.
