Commentary by Nanette Laster
What you are reading is my new year’s resolution -- for 2012.
I promised to at least try to write a column every week in 2012, and, as you can tell by today’s date, I did not do a very good job.
Column writers amaze me. I know how hard it is to write a column on a regular basis. Topics of interest can be hard to find.
Arnold Dye has written for us for six years, and to my knowledge has not missed a week of submitting something, except when he was ill. Yes, there have been some weeks when his column was not in the paper, but that was due to the frazzled nerves of a forgetful editor trying to make her deadline.
My boss is also good about producing a column every week, but, hey, what else does he have to do?
I’m going to use this week to do a little catching up.
Community Heroes
The search is under way for Good Neighbors in our community.
We are working on our annual Profiles edition, which is scheduled for publication on April 26. Every year we recognize a number of Good Neighbors, based on nominations from our readers.
From these nominations, a Citizen of the Year is selected. So far, the community has honored Paul Davison, Trish Hightower, Cora Ford Ingram, Jack Holmes, the Rev. Johnny Dinas and Margaret and John Keeton. All have been tremendous supporters of our community, as have the Good Neighbors.
You probably know someone who works quietly behind the scenes trying to make Grenada and Grenada County better for all of us.
They serve the community quietly, with no regard for personal gain or publicity. They eagerly reach out across racial or ethnic lines to help others in need.
Those are the folks we seek to recognize. You will find a nomination form on page 5-B of today’s newspaper. I hope you will nominate someone.
Motown Returns
The Masters of Motown are returning to Grenada on Feb. 19 for a performance at the Holmes Community College Corey Forum.
The show is sponsored by the Grenada Arts Partnership (GAP), Grenada and Holmes Partner for the Arts. The group was here two years ago and are returning at the public’s request. Tickets are $20 each, and you may buy them at the HCC business office. Don’t wait until the last minute.
The concert starts at 7 p.m. Wear your dancing shoes, and I’ll see you there.
