For the Kirk Raiderettes, their success relies on their ability to score off their pressure defense.
Saturday, they weren’t able to do that against the Indianola Academy Lady Colonels.
IA was also able to score on the Kirk press. The Lady Colonels held KA to eight first half points and held on for a 38-31 win to capture the Kirk Invitational Tournament championship.
The Raiderettes drop to 17-6 with the loss.
In other action, the Raiders lost a 68-40 decision to West Memphis in the semifinals Friday night.
“We missed way too many easy shots,” Coach Amy Carroll Hudspeth said. “There were a lot of points that we left on the floor.”
Hudspeth also took blame for not getting out of the press. IA was able to score several points against the pressure.
“It’s my fault for not getting out of the press quicker than we did,” Hudspeth said. “It’s what we do best  but they were able to beat us back down the court.”
Kirk got on the board first as Lauren Snyder scored at the 7:24 mark of the opening period. The Raiderettes would not score again until Hayden Grantham hit a bucket with 5:45 left in the half to cut the IA lead to 10-4.
The Lady Colonels led by as many as nine points on two different occasions in the second period.
Indianola scored four of the first six points of the second half to lead 21-10 early in the third period. The lead stayed double digits throughout most of the period.
Kirk was able to get within eight points at 27-19 following a Daniella DiPaolo free throw with 44.2 left in the period.
The Raiderettes made a run late in the game limiting IA to just one point in the final four minutes. Two free throws from DiPaolo with 12.8 left accounted for the final margin.
Snyder led scoring with 10 points. Grantham and DiPaolo both had seven points. Brett Adair Kyle scored four points. Beth Tillman had two and Micah Brooke Woods added one.
Kirk made it to the finals with a 54-25 win over West Memphis Christian.
Snyder paced the Raiderettes with 15 points. DiPaolo had eight points. Margaret Taylor finished with seven. Woods and Kyle both scored six points. Beth Boxx added five points. Lexie Simmons and Kassandra Beck both had three, and Tillman chipped in a point.
Boys
Drew Tillman led Kirk with 12 points against the Black Knights. William Gibson scored nine and Tyler Kirk finished with eight.
Kirk trailed by 11 points at the half. The Black Knights broke the game open with a 23-3 third period.
Kirk was scheduled to play last night against Clarksdale Lee, but the game was cancelled due to weather. Tonight, they are slated to go to Batesville to play North Delta.
