Ever wanted to learn to weld? How about do car repair? Perhaps prepare a gourmet meal?
The Grenada School District is offering night classes to help Grenadians learn a new trick or two.
“These classes will give community members the opportunity to obtain skills in areas that might be of interest and at the same time gain skills necessary to compete in today’s workforce,” said Superintendent Dr. David Daigneault in a press release.
The classes will be offered Tuesday nights, Jan. 8 through Feb. 12, from 6-8 p.m., at the Grenada Career and Technical Center in the Culinary Arts-GLAD Building.
The classes will cost $50-$75 per session.
Classes now forming include Microsoft Word, taught by Bonnie Brunt. Students will learn to create customized documents using tools like format, pictures and clip art, drawing tools, WordArt and mail merge.
Phillip McCarter will teach a welding class for $75.
Students in the construction class will pay $75 to learn from Fred Taylor about construction math and equipment, estimating building materials, how to use and care for power tools, wiring and circuitry and the basics of blueprints.
Everyone needs to know basic automotive repair skills, and Ricky Jones is set to offer some useful instruction. For $50 students will learn how change their car’s oil, do brake work and how to navigate the owner’s manual.
Allison Ashmore will teach a class in floral design and gardening. For $65 students will learn about using wreaths in the home and outdoors, nature banner hangings, container gardening with herbs and simple plant propagation.
Pod casting and music production are useful tricks to have up one’s sleeve, and Lynne Russell will offer a class in which students will work on Apple iMac computers, use the Garage Band programs and create Pod casts and original music.
Melissa Taylor’s pottery class is already full, but there’s a waiting list. For $50, students will create, sculpt and pour ceramics and pottery. The class will also include glazing, painting and firing.
Everyone would like to know how to cook better, and $50 classes in the culinary arts are sure to fill up fast. Students will enjoy an evening of preparing and tasting original creations presented by local chefs.
Glenn Smith, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of New York, will teach students to prepare French onion soup and Caesar salad on Jan. 8, as well as gourmet pizza on Jan. 29.
Susan Baker, owner of Sugarplums Bakery, will teach the delicate art of cupcake decorating on Jan. 15, as well as candy making on Feb. 5.
Dianne Chidlow, owner and chef at Orleans Bistrow, will teach students to prepare shrimp and grits on Jan. 22, as well as filet and trimmings on Feb. 12.
