Some Grenada residents will be able to live in warmer, safer homes, thanks to a local volunteer organization.
This year marks the twelfth year that Grenada County Christmas in April has made living more suitable for the disadvantaged in the area.

According to board member Kim McRee, this will continue this year but more skilled volunteers are needed.

"People with skills are always good to have," said McRee.

April 22 is set for the beginning of Christmas in April where so far three families have been picked for a home makeover.

McRee said a single mother with two handicapped children, one that is on kidney dialysis, is on the list to receive repairs. She says the family's home will have their doors widened for wheelchair access.

"We're making the entire home handicapped accessible."

McRee says the bathtub will also have rails installed.

  • A paralyzed man that receives an $800 monthly income will have ramps placed at his doorways and possibly roof repairs.
  • A widow that receives $794 a month will also have wheelchair accessible ramps placed at her home. She will also have new heaters installed.
"There are a lot of skilled people in Grenada that can donate eight hours a year to help the disadvantaged," McRee said.

McRee adds that volunteers taking part in Christmas in April should be at Coldwell Banker at 7 a.m. on the morning of April 22.
