The Grenada School Board of Trustees meeting honored a late board member yesterday when his name was added to an annual award.

A decision by Grenada Superintendent Buddy Pender and Superintendent-elect David Daigneault to name the annual Star Student Award in honor of the late school board member Larry Conley passed unanimously last night. The Star Student award goes to the student with the highest ACT score. Board president Tim LeClair made to motion to accept the honor in Conley's name. The motion was seconded by District Four board member James Hughes. District Three board member Arlene Conley, wife of the late board member, was on hand when the motion passed unanimously, with the exception of Keith Watson who was absent. The decision touched Arlene Conley as well as the entire board. "Mr. Conley served many, many years on the board and he was very supportive throughout his tenure," said a teary eyed Pender during his announcement. Pender said Conley was the first board member to pass away while in office and it is appropriate to name the award in his honor. "He worked well with parents, teachers, and students no matter what their background was," Pender said, "we were close friends." This marks the first award that is named after a minority in the Grenada School District. |
