A proposed ballpark may be in the future for Holcomb residents who want a place where families and children can come to play and stay to enjoy.

In Monday's Board meeting, supervisors authorized North Central Planning and Development District (NCPDD) to apply for a Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) Self-Help grant, for a Holcomb ballpark. District Five Supervisor James Cummins (also president of the Holcomb Lions Club) said that if approved, the Self-Help grant program will pay for 70 percent of the cost to build a ballpark complete with dugouts, fencing, lighting, parking, concession stand, and bathroom. "The Holcomb Lions Club will be putting in 30 percent of the total cost in the form of in-kind labor," Cummins said. "We expect the project will cost in the neighborhood of $100,000." Only $500,000 has been allocated for the Self-Help grant program, and that's for all of Mississippi, Cummins said. "$250,000 of that has already been set aside to fund last year's projects-if we want some of this money, we've got to get our application in or somebody else will get it," he said. A long-term lease from the Grenada School District has secured land suitable for use as a ballfield in Holcomb. "It can be used as a kids' softball or baseball field, or as a men's and women's softball field," Cummins said. A public hearing will be held Wednesday, March 27, at 11 a.m. to gather citizen comments on the project. |
