Local tennis team wins state title

The Mississippi Tennis Association recently sponsored the Mississippi Combo Doubles Championships in Jackson. Lisa Thomas was the captain for the winning 5.5 Women’s team. Since they won their division they will compete in the Southern Sectional Championships in March 2013.    The Grenada 5.5 United States Tennis  Association women’s tennis team recently captured the state title at Ridgeland.
   With the title, the group will advance to the Sectionals March 1-3, 2013, in Mobile.
   In that tournament, they will compete against teams from Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
   In the state tournament, the local squad lost a 2-1 decision to a team from the Delta. They would bounce back with a 2-1 win over Howington/Southwest. The next day, they won a 3-0 decision over Buchanan/Jackson, and followed that with a 3-0 win over Bradley/Gulf Coast. Those wins allowed them to win their flight and the right to play for the championship.
   In the title match, Peach Ryals and Sandra Howell won 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 over Larissa Montreal and Felisah Sheppard. LaMonda Stanford and Meredith Moore dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 0-1 decision to Deidra Dungee and Ramonica Lewis. Bonnie Keene and Debby Patterson won 6-3, 7-5 in their match against Ladonna Spencer and Vanessa Wilson.
